Entertainment

The Frustrated Maestros Great Lakes chapter of F.M.C.A. is a fun-loving, energetic group of volunteers whose main interest is playing and singing music. Each year, the group's concerts are an exciting part of the G.L.A.S.S. daytime and evening entertainment.  The Maestros are located on the "midway" in Building #35 across from the  KFC Gazebo.  Besides the main band and choral group, there are many specialized groups performing for your pleasure; the Bluegrass Group, the March and Swing Group, a Jazz Combo, and various vocal ensembles, as well as talented vocal and instrumental soloists and specialty or comedy acts.  Chapter members include professional musicians, music educators, and others who just love music and have "dusted off" their high school instruments or their singing voices to perform with the group.

Our entertainment team has really rounded up great performers for G.L.A.S.S. 2012.  Click on each of next 5 pictures below and nose around the performer's web sites as some have demo music for your listening enjoyment.

Thursday, May 24 - 8:00 p.m. - The Allegheny String Band is a retired military family who love to play music. We started as an RVing family just last year and tour the country playing our music. Mary, 18, plays the fiddle, mandolin, tin whistle, upright bass, and keyboard.  Joe, 16, plays fiddle, banjo, tin whistle, jaw harp, and spoons.  Beth, 15, plays the guitar, keyboard, and upright bass.  Pete plays upright bass.

Their repertoire includes a variety of music, including bluegrass, Irish, country, waltzes, reels, and patriotic songs. Wherever they go, people enjoy them and many follow us on our RV adventures.

We play at festivals, fairs, campgrounds, RV parks, weddings, special events, military bases, VFW’s, American Legions, clubs, farmer’s markets, and even the Wheeling Jamboree, to name a few. These organizations pay for our entertainment and our music is enjoyed by all ages.

Friday, May 25 - 8:00 p.m. - Maria Rose and Danny Elswick are respected entertainers and were chosen from groups nationwide to travel for the USO, taking a 'touch of home' by performing for our Armed Forces on 11 different overseas tours. They are shown frequently as featured performers on the nationally-broadcast "Midwest Country" TV Show on the RFD-TV network.

Maria Rose has appeared on numerous national television and radio shows, hosted her own television show, and is known for her outgoing personality and stage presence. She scored high on country music charts with "Can We Still Be Friends", and touched the hearts of thousands of Special Olympics athletes at events around the world by performing a song she wrote for them, "You Are the Flame".  Maria is a recipient of the prestigious Presidential "Point of Light" Award. She is a former "Miss Baseball" for the Baltimore Orioles, and represented them at local and national events.

Danny Elswick is an experienced lead guitarist, a recording engineer, and the full instrumentation behind this duo's full musical sound, as well as all their recorded CD projects. Danny excels at singing, and at playing a number of musical instruments including the lead guitar, steel guitar, banjo, mandolin.

Saturday Evening, May 26 - 8:00 p.m. - The John Bressler Show  - John Bressler has a great passion to entertain.  He’s performed on television’s MTV, VH-1,  the Grand Ole Opry and all over North America.  Famous for his unique presentation including a rotating “Phantom Grand Piano”, this singer/songwriter/comedian/musician has nine critically acclaimed albums to his credit.  He has shared stages with Willy Nelson, Kenny Rogers, Alan Jackson, Ray Charles, Alabama, Leann Rimes, Gloria Estefan, and many others.  This multi-talented piano player and keyboardist known for his exuberant stage presence has been compared to Liberace,  Victor Borge, Yanni, Elton John, and Billy Joel.  With a soulfully raspy vocal style much like Rod Stewart or Louis Armstrong, spontaneous wry observations and insights, and a show featuring the sublime as often as the ridiculous,  The John Bressler Show is celebrating over a quarter century of making people extremely happy.  It’s a must-see show that’s totally unique, and that audiences from around the world truly love.

Sunday Morning, May 27 - 9:30 a.m. -  Glenn Bulthuis was born in Los Angeles and began singing in front of people in elementary and high school.  He grew up listening to the Beatles and James Taylor and began writing songs in high school.  Glenn attended Calvin College and since then has played concerts at Calvin’s Fine Arts Center for over 30 years.  Glenn plays guitar, banjo and piano and is worship director at Oakhill Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids.  He has recorded six CD’s and has performed with his band, the Tonedeafs at the Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place, Fifth Third Ball park and throughout the United States and Canada.

Glenn’s newest Gospel CD recording “Gloryland” will be released in February of 2012.

On the morning of May 27, 2012, Glenn and his 5-piece band will play a selection of Sunday morning standards and Praise and Worship music that will appeal to the whole family.  Glenn will play bluegrass gospel standards “I’ll Fly Away”, “There is Power in the Blood”, as well as familiar Praise and Worship songs “Shout to the Lord” and “Days of Elijah” along with a few of his own original songs.

Sunday Evening, May 27 - 8:00 p.m. -  Glenn Bulthuis first saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9, 1964.  From that day forth, the music of the Beatles would have a profound impact on his writing and musical direction.  Throughout the 70’s and 80’s Glenn and his band, The Tonedeafs played a variety of music, but they always came back to playing the music of the Beatles.  Finally in 2008, after having recorded six CD’s and over 30 years of live performances, Glenn and his band set about creating a concert of 25 Beatles Classics.

The resulting “Glenn Bulthuis and the Tonedeafs play the Music of the Beatles” show was an instant hit and has been performed many times throughout West Michigan.  You will enjoy songs from the early days (“I Want to Hold Your Hand”, “She Loves You”) all the way through to their final Abbey Road Album (“Here Comes the Sun”, “Golden Slumbers/Carry that Weight/The End”).

The music of the Beatles defined the 1960’s and has influenced our culture ever since.  Glenn mixes a combination of humor and storytelling through all of his performances.    You and your family will enjoy this walk back in time through many of the hits you have  grown to know and love from the swingin’ 60’s.
